Matthew Flinders (1774 – 1814) was most famous for circumnavigating Australia and discovering the Bass Strait. He owned a cat named Trim and a ship's surgeon named George Bass. He was the first to chart a full map of Australia before being captured by the French. He was released 6 years later.
